THE PURE COLLECTION

The history of linen in France

At Maison Le Roy, we are passionate about the rich history of linen production in France. We take great pride in continuing this tradition today.

After centuries thinking about keeping warm, prehistoric tribes found the use of wool and linen. The latter was so much more abundant than wool, and this fabric making took flight. Linen has been the preferred fabric for centuries. The Vikings preferred linen for their armouring and for the durability. It was also used for making sails and rope. Builders used linen rope to make a straight line (yes, that's where the word came from). Historically, Jeanne d'Arc - a great symbol of freedom in France - waved her linen banner to victory.

It's no wonder the French perfected each stage of harvesting and manufacturing cloth, using the flax that grew so easily. The strong fibre was durable  and became even softer with time, making it an advantageous fabric. Marie-Antoinette and Louis XIV made linen a regal material, even ordering their court tto only wear items made from this textile. The word 'lingerie' (underwear) still carries the importance of the soft, breathable characteristics of linen.

Linen has been a great part of history, we are happy to still be part of this great wealth of artistry & craftmanship.
